SCC Womens Volleyball Team takes second
The tournament was set up in a 16 team, true double elimination format. Shoreline defeated Yakima Valley in the first round of the tournament, then lost to Mount Hood, which dropped Shoreline into the losers bracket. In a true double elimination tournament, the winner of the losers bracket gets to compete for the title. Shoreline then defeated Walla Walla, eliminating them from the tournament. On November 23, the last day of the tournament, Shoreline eliminated Whatcom, Columbia Basin and the Eastern Region Champions Spokane, who had actually entered the tournament as the favorite. Next Shoreline faced the Northern Region Championship team, Bellevue, and eliminated them without dropping a game. Finally, that evening, Shoreline again faced Mount Hood with the championship on the line. Even though the Lady Dolphins lost the match, they all agree that their run through the losers bracket was an incredible experience. We peaked at the right time, says Coach Raquel West. They all played their best matches of the year. According to sophomore hitter Tara Glover, Shoreline really earned respect throughout the league. Shoreline had three players named to the All-Tournament team including setter Shannon Cuillier and hitters Yulissa Zamudio and Jessica English. Co-head coaches Raquel and Mark West have built a very strong program at Shoreline in the past few years. This kind of showing in the championship tournament is sure to help them in their recruiting for next year. Congratulations volleyball team! College President Holly Moore visited the team at their last practice on Nov 20th to meet the girls and wish them well in the tournament. She presented each player with a Shoreline pennant and talked to them about the tournament and their expectations. The players expressed their appreciation for the support demonstrated by President Moore and by the Student Body Association.
