"This was a big honor for Shoreline Community College," said Athletic
Director Ken Burrus. As an example, Burrus points out two recent Shoreline graduates, Kevin Bradley and Alistar Faux, who are currently playing Division One college basketball. Bradley is a point guard at the University of Utah, and Faux is a shooting guard at San Diego State University. "The NWAACC is full of great athletes and great people," says Burrus. "Most people find that community college games are a whole lot more fun to watch than professional games." This year's tournament was filled with high-quality student-athletes from all over Washington and Oregon. Sixteen teams competed, four from each of NWAACC’s four regions. Qualifying teams included: Shoreline, Edmonds, North Seattle, Whatcom, Tacoma, Lower Columbia, Clark, Highline, Yakima, Big Bend, Walla Walla, Columbia Basin, Clackamas, Lane, Umpqua and Mt. Hood. Shoreline lost in the opening round (92-90) to Highline, and Highline eventually won the championship. Shoreline had a one point lead at the end of the game until Highline hit a three pointer with four seconds remaining. Tacoma Community College took second place and Edmonds took third. On
March 8-11, 2001 Shoreline Community College hosted the Northwest Athletic Association of
Community Colleges (NWAACC) Men's Basketball Championship tournament. This was the
first time in Shoreline's history that the college had hosted a conference tournament of
any kind. Hosting this tournament was a real privilege for the college and became
possible because of a renovation of the gymnasium floor. In August of 1999, the
college replaced the old tartan floor with a new maple wood surface. 
"Community college athletics are not well publicized in the
city, and we were anticipating that hosting a tournament of this magnitude would make the
public and the media more aware of the high-quality programs that the NWAACC
provides."
